What title case actually means

Title case is not the same as putting a capital on every word. Editorial style capitalises the first and last words of a title no matter what they are, capitalises every significant word in between, and leaves a short list of small words in lower case. That is why the correct form is The Lord of the Rings, not The Lord Of The Rings.

The words that stay lower case

Each of these is capitalised anyway when it lands first or last in the title, because position outranks the word list. To Kill a Mockingbird keeps its opening To capitalised for exactly that reason.

Colons start a new phrase

A colon introduces a subtitle, and a subtitle begins afresh, so the word straight after it is capitalised even when it is on the small-word list. seo in 2026: the state of search becomes SEO in 2026: The State of Search rather than leaving the lower-case the stranded mid-title.

Acronyms and brand names

Anything already written in capitals is treated as a deliberate acronym and preserved, so NASA and HTML are not reduced to Nasa and Html. The Fix known acronyms and brand names option, on by default, goes the other way and repairs lower-case terms: php becomes PHP, wordpress becomes WordPress, iphone becomes iPhone. Only terms that are never an ordinary English word are on that list, so it cannot damage normal prose. Clear the checkbox to leave every word exactly as a straight conversion would set it.

Capitalise every word instead switches to the simpler style where no word is exempt. That is the right choice for proper names and menu labels, and the wrong one for headlines.
