How to convert inches to feet
Divide the inches by twelve. The whole number is the feet and what is left over is the inches, so 67 inches is 5 remainder 7 — five feet seven. There is no approximation anywhere in this: a foot has been exactly twelve inches for centuries.
Going the other way, multiply the feet by twelve and add the inches. Five feet seven is 5 × 12 + 7 = 67 inches.
The mistake almost everyone makes
5.7 feet and 5 feet 7 inches are not the same measurement. This trips up more people than any other part of imperial arithmetic, and it is worth being precise about:
- 5.7 feet means five feet plus seven tenths of a foot. Seven tenths of twelve inches is 8.4 inches, so it is 5 feet 8.4 inches.
- 5 feet 7 inches means five feet plus seven twelfths of a foot. As a decimal that is 5.583 feet.
The difference is nearly an inch and a half. That is the gap between a door frame fitting and not fitting. The converter above shows both forms of every answer for exactly this reason.
Why the nearest sixteenth is shown
Decimal inches are convenient in a spreadsheet and useless at a workbench. Tape measures are marked in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths, so a joiner reading 7.4375 in has to convert it again before cutting anything. The answer is therefore also given as 7 7/16, reduced to its simplest form — eight sixteenths is shown as a half, not as 8/16.

Where the numbers come from
Both conversions are exact by definition, not measured. Twelve inches make a foot, and since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 an inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres — which makes a foot exactly 304.8 mm and a yard exactly 0.9144 m. Any rounding you see on this page happens in the display, never in the arithmetic.
One exception exists and it almost certainly does not affect you: the US survey foot, used in American land surveying until 2023, was a hair longer at 1200/3937 of a metre. Over a few feet the difference is invisible; over a mile it is about an eighth of an inch. Everything here uses the international foot.

Twelve, exactly. The foot has been defined as 12 inches for centuries, and since 1959 the international inch has been exactly 25.4 millimetres, which makes a foot exactly 304.8 millimetres. Both figures are exact by definition rather than measured, so no rounding is involved.

Why does my answer show a fraction like 7/16?
Because that is how a tape measure is marked. Building, joinery and most American trades work in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths of an inch rather than decimals, so the nearest sixteenth is shown alongside the decimal. You can cut to 7 7/16; you cannot cut to 7.4375.
